Pardon the shortness of this diary, but at this stage of my thinking I'm still struggling for the right words. I have been thinking about, and somewhat troubled by, the implications of the Shell Oil "six degree" memo.
First off, if Shell is planning for this level of climate warming, you can bet the other big oil companies are doing the same.
If the corporatocracy is planning on it, you can bet the federal government is planning on it.
Yet in both the media and the official policy statements of the government, this scenario is downplayed, and I am thinking for the obvious reason: the fear of panic. Or for a less obvious reason: they realize it is too late to do anything. So that cat is out of the bag, so to speak. With fuller implications down the road.
But maybe, just maybe, Shell et. al. are exhibiting the institutional blinders common to profiteers, in that they cannot see what they don't want to see, as alternative and renewable resources grow ever cheaper by the day, and their product becomes prohibitively more expensive to extract.
